On a recent trip to the Schist Villages, I was really impressed with what’s been done to facilitate swimming in the rivers of the Centro Region of Portugal. I’m not a salt water fan, so the idea of a clean river beach is quite enticing.
The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches/marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services.
As you can see from the picture above right of Louçainha Beach, the development of the Schist Village beaches isn’t about hanging a rope over a deep part of the creek. Some even have restaurants and other facilities, which you can see in the picture at the bottom of this post.
According to the Tourism Board of Centro de Portugal:
This year’s Blue Flag river beaches of Centro de Portugal region are: Serra da Estrela – Aldeia Viçosa and Valhelhas and Louçainha river beach near the Schist Village of Ferraria de São João.
Don’t know where the Centro Region of Portugal is? See: Portugal Regions Map.
The Schist Villages have a map as well.
