Wandering Portugal started with a picture of the castle of Belmonte because I was quite impressed with the small town on a recent visit. You can look at Belmonte from several perspectives, as a town of explorers, as a home to “Crypto Jews” and as a border town with a fine castle and a gourmet hotel/restaurant
They also have a fine medieval festival—quite different from all the medieval festivals I’ve attended in Italy. For one, we seldom see belly dancing and camels in Italian medieval festivals.
Although the narration is in Portuguese, this rather long video should give you an idea of what a Portuguese border town looks like when transformed into a medieval village.
