Santarém will host the 30th annual National Gastronomic Festival starting today, October 16th, 2010 and extending to November 1st. According to Tourism do Portugal:
The doors will be open to the public from noon until 4 pm and again from 7 pm until midnight Monday to Friday, and continually from noon until midnight at weekends. A small entrance fee is charged.
Santarém is known as the country’s bullfighting capital.
Visitors to the festival can wander around the Casa do Campino sampling regional foods from all over Portugal. Handicrafts from all over Portugal can also be purchased. Over 100,000 visitors are expected to this year’s gastronomic festival.
Aromatic herbs, spices, cheeses, fresh fish and convent sweets are some of the delicacies that you will find here.
Santarém is 65 km northeast of Lisbon.
